The Color Purple, a Warner Bros. adaptation of the famous book, movie, and Broadway musical, has made a significant impact at the box office. After just two days in theaters, it has earned $25 million, with $7.1 million on Tuesday alone. Its opening day, which was on Christmas, saw it earn $18 million, almost breaking the record for the biggest Christmas Day opening since 2009.
Directed by Blitz Bazawule, the film is showing strong potential for a musical adaptation, a genre that has seen mixed success recently. Despite its high production cost of $100 million, the film is poised to be profitable, supported by positive reviews and strong public interest. The cast includes Fantasia Barrino, Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, and Colman Domingo.

In contrast, the holiday season has been somewhat underwhelming for other films. “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” hasn’t matched the success of its predecessor, earning $46 million in five days. “Wonka,” another Warner Bros. release, is faring better with Timothée Chalamet as Willy Wonka, grossing $95.5 million domestically and $280 million globally.
