Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is a monster brawl film that’s crushing it at the box office! It grabbed the number 3 spot globally in its opening weekend, bringing in a whopping $194 million. This puts it behind Dune: Part Two (which has been out for a while longer) and the animated Kung Fu Panda 4.
The movie did great overseas, raking in $114 million from 64 countries. In North America, it surprised everyone with an $80 million opening. China was the biggest international market for The New Empire, followed by Mexico and India.
The movie’s creators aimed to make a super fun experience for audiences, and it seems to be working! Director Adam Wingard is back for this sequel, which stars Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, and Dan Stevens. Unlike past films where Godzilla and Kong fight, this one sees them team up to fight a new enemy that threatens the world.
The New Empire cost a lot to make ($135 million!), so it needs to keep selling tickets worldwide to be profitable. But with this strong start, it has a good chance of beating out the previous movie, Godzilla vs. Kong which earned $474 million in 2021.
Speaking of Dune: Part Two, it continues to reign supreme as the year’s biggest movie with a total of $626 million globally. This weekend, it added another $18.4 million from international markets. China, the UK, Germany, and France are its biggest international territories so far.
“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” stands as the third-highest-grossing movie of the year, collecting a mighty $194 million globally in its opening weekend. https://t.co/JtdA4j6r7U
