The well-known Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou is set to receive a special honor for his lifetime work at the Far East Film Festival in Udine, Italy, happening from April 24th to May 2nd. At this festival, attendees can watch three of Zhang’s movies: his recent political thriller “Under the Light” will compete for awards, while “To Live” and “Raise the Red Lantern” will be shown as beautifully restored classics.
This year, the festival boasts a diverse selection of 74 movies, with 47 competing for prizes and 27 shown outside the competition. These films come from 11 different countries. The festival will start with a bang, featuring the popular Chinese film “YOLO” and a Korean action comedy titled “Citizen of a Kind.”
Among the notable films to watch are 13 Bombs from Indonesia, directed by Angga Dwimas Sasongko, and “The Goldfinger” by Felix Chong from Hong Kong.
Other films to look out for include a drama about investigative journalism called “In Broad Daylight” from Lawrence Kan of Hong Kong, and The Movie Emperor by Ning Hao. Japanese films are also well-represented with ten movies, including “(Ab)normal Desire” by Kishi Yoshiyuki, Gold Boy by Kaneko Shusuke, and “Missing” by Yoshida Keisuke.
From South Korea, there are eleven films to be excited about, like the political thriller “12.12: The Day,” both parts of the fantasy series “Alienoid” from 2022 and 2024, “Exhuma,” a drama about exorcism that’s been a huge hit, and “The Roundup: Punishment,” a comedy action movie starring Don Lee, a well-known Korean American actor.

In other news, the Whanau Marama: New Zealand International Film Festival is expanding. This festival will now bring its selection of films to six more regions in New Zealand, including Hamilton, Napier, Nelson, New Plymouth, Masterton, and Tauranga during August and September. This is in addition to the screenings already planned in Wellington, Auckland, Dunedin, and Christchurch, starting in July. Source
