Disney has made a big move by spending over $75 million to get exclusive rights to stream “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version)” on Disney+ around the world. This news comes from Puck News, which heard from unnamed sources that Disney won the deal over Netflix and Universal Pictures. Universal Pictures was previously in charge of the digital and video-on-demand distribution of films.
Disney hasn’t made any comments about this streaming agreement for “The Eras Tour,” which is going to feature five extra songs that weren’t part of the movie’s earlier versions. Attempts to get a response from Taylor Swift’s representative didn’t get an immediate reply.
The concert film “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” after being shown in theaters worldwide on October 13, earned $261.7 million globally. This made it the most successful concert film ever. The film captures Taylor Swift’s first three Los Angeles concerts of the Eras tour, which happened from August 3 to 5, 2023. The original theater version, which lasted for 2 hours and 45 minutes, didn’t include several songs from the live shows.
Disney+ is set to release an extended version of “The Eras Tour” on March 15, which includes “Cardigan” from Swift’s 2020 album “Folklore” and four acoustic tracks. The specific names of these four songs haven’t been shared by Swift or Disney, but they’re expected to be the four acoustic “surprise songs” Swift performed during her L.A. shows.
Disney’s CEO Bob Iger expressed excitement about Disney+ offering fans the chance to watch the “Taylor Swift: Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version)” anytime they wish.
The digital version of “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” came out on December 13, which is also Swift’s birthday. Distributed by Universal, this version added three bonus songs not shown in theaters — “Wildest Dreams,” “The Archer,” and “Long Live” — extending the film’s length to 3 hours and 1 minute.
