Christopher Nolan just won his first Golden Globe for directing the hit film Oppenheimer. This is a big deal for Nolan, who’s been nominated before for his work on movies like Memento, Inception, and Dunkirk but hasn’t won until now. Oppenheimer is a serious, three-hour movie about history that did really well in theaters.

Nolan was in a tough race for Best Director, competing against Bradley Cooper, Greta Gerwig, Yorgos Lanthimos, Martin Scorsese, and Celine Song, who all directed great films this year.

During his speech, Nolan talked about a previous time he was on stage to accept an award for Heath Ledger, who had passed away. He remembered how Robert Downey Jr.’s supportive look helped him. Ledger, known for his amazing role as the Joker in The Dark Knight, directed by Nolan, won many awards after his death.

Nolan thanked everyone who worked on Oppenheimer, especially Cillian Murphy, calling him a long-time partner. Murphy, who has worked with Nolan in many films, later won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama. He thanked Nolan for trusting him for 20 years and praised Nolan’s unique way of directing.

“Oppenheimer” was a surprise hit, making it the third top-earning movie of 2023, with $951 million worldwide. The film, based on a famous book, stars Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the scientist who led the atomic bomb project. The film also features famous actors like Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, and Alden Ehrenreich.
