The Neverending Story, a popular children’s fantasy book by German writer Michael Ende that turned into a famous movie in 1984, is getting a new set of movies. This project is a collaboration between Michael Ende Productions and See-Saw Films, a company known for adapting famous books into movies and TV shows. They’ve received the rights to make the films from the person in charge of Ende’s work.
This book, first out in 1979, was a hit in Germany and then around the world, translated into 45 languages and selling millions of copies. It tells the story of Bastian, a kid who finds a magical book about a hero named Atreyu trying to save their magical world, Fantastica, and its ruler from a destructive force called “The Nothing.” As Bastian reads more, he finds himself becoming a part of this fantasy world, riding the dragon Falkor.
The people at See-Saw Films, who have made several successful films and TV series before, are excited about this project. They believe “The Neverending Story” has timeless appeal and are looking forward to introducing it to a new generation with fresh insights. Finding the right creative team to bring the book to life on screen is their next step, including writers and directors who share a passion for the story.
The production aims to be a big international effort, with plans to film in various colourful locations described in the book, and also in Germany, linking back to the book’s roots. This comes at a time when there’s a big interest in ’80s culture, partly thanks to shows like “Stranger Things,” which even featured the movie’s theme song.
The new movies are seen as a way to celebrate storytelling’s power and importance, something Michael Ende, the book’s author, strongly believed in. The team behind this project wants to honour Ende’s legacy by bringing his magical world to life for both old fans and new audiences. Source
