In the movie “Mamífera,” we meet Lola, a 40-year-old played by Maria Rodríguez Soto, and her boyfriend Bruno, played by Enric Auquer. Their relationship is shown to be very close and loving from the start, as seen in a cozy scene where they’re together in the shower and then drying off. This scene sets the tone for how well they understand and care for each other.

Soon, Lola finds out she’s unexpectedly pregnant, 10 weeks along. This surprise comes at a time when her friend Judit, who’s trying hard to have a baby through IVF, is struggling with her own fertility journey. Lola’s accidental pregnancy creates an awkward situation since she knows how much Judit wants a child.

The movie dives deep into Lola’s feelings about the pregnancy. Unlike the typical movie characters who are shocked by unexpected pregnancies, Lola is shown as a balanced and happy person with a good job and a stable relationship. She’s seen as someone who could be a great mom, but she’s also someone who was happy without planning to have children.

Maria Rodríguez Soto’s performance as Lola is so genuine and engaging that it earned her an award at the SXSW festival. Lola’s journey through the film is filled with inner conflict as she weighs the societal value of motherhood against her own desire to not have children.

An interesting aspect of the film is its use of dreamy, animated sequences that reflect Lola’s thoughts and feelings about potentially becoming a mother. These animations are inspired by Lola’s own art, adding a unique layer to the story.

Towards the end of the movie, Lola decides to have an abortion. This choice is presented in a thoughtful and sensitive way, focusing on what this decision means for her future and happiness, rather than framing it as something negative.

“Mamífera” stands out for its nuanced and heartfelt approach to the story of a woman making a deeply personal choice, celebrating the idea of living life on one’s own terms. It’s a refreshing take on a topic that’s often depicted in a more conventional way in movies. Source
