Outlaw Posse is a new action-packed movie directed by Mario Van Peebles, who also writes, stars in, and produces the film. This movie draws inspiration from the ’70s Blaxploitation films and the classic Spaghetti Westerns of the ’60s, but it stands on its own with a unique story and characters. It’s not directly connected to Van Peebles’ earlier Western film, Posse, from 1993, but it shares a similar spirit of adventure and rebellion.
Set in 1908, the story kicks off with Chief (played by Van Peebles), a skilled gunslinger, hiding out near Mexico long after he’s hidden a stash of Confederate gold at the end of the Civil War. Despite the years, Chief hasn’t lost his edge and proves it when he takes down some racists threatening him and a Native American in a bar. Feeling it’s time to reclaim the hidden gold in Montana, Chief gathers his diverse group of friends, or posse, which includes characters from different backgrounds and skills, adding a multicultural twist to the tale.
The journey to retrieve the gold isn’t smooth, as Chief and his crew face challenges from old foes, particularly a villain named Angel, who’s obsessed with getting revenge on Chief and seizing the gold for himself. Angel’s plan involves kidnapping Chief’s son, Decker (played by Mario’s real-life son, Mandela Van Peebles), and Decker’s wife, Malindy, adding personal stakes to Chief’s quest.
Despite its complex plot and many characters, Outlaw Posse keeps viewers engaged with its energetic performances, especially from the supporting cast that includes stars like Edward James Olmos, Cedric the Entertainer, and Whoopi Goldberg. The film features thrilling shootouts and action scenes, while also touching on themes of injustice and resilience, reflecting Van Peebles’ interest in addressing historical and social issues.

Outlaw Posse is also a family affair, continuing the legacy of Mario Van Peebles’ father, Melvin Van Peebles, who was a pioneer in Black cinema. This film pays tribute to that legacy while offering a fresh take on the Western genre, blending humor, action, and a message about unity and standing up against oppression. Source
