Imax had an almost record-breaking year in 2023 at the movie theaters, mainly due to the huge hit of Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi movie Oppenheimer. This company is known for its large, high-quality movie screens. They made $1.06 billion globally, which is their second-best year ever. This is a 24.4% increase from what they made in 2022.
In North America alone, Imax earned $393.2 million, making 2023 their best year in this region. This surpassed their earnings in 2019, a year with many big movies like Avengers: Endgame. Imax also made a lot of money, $227.1 million, from local movies in China, India, and Japan and started working with new movie studios in Indonesia and Thailand.
Imax has grown, with 1,615 locations in 2023, more than in 2019. They showed 98 new movies in the past year, more than ever before.
The biggest money-maker for Imax was Oppenheimer, which brought in $183.2 million. This movie, about the person who helped create the atomic bomb, was so popular that some fans traveled far to see it on the best screens. It became Imax’s fourth most successful movie. Thanks to this movie, Imax had its best summer ever in 54 countries, including the U.S. and China.
Apart from Oppenheimer, other popular Imax movies were Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concert film and the animated The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
Rich Gelfond, the CEO of Imax, said that in 2023 they offered many amazing movies, from Oppenheimer to Taylor Swift, and films from China, India, and Japan. This made it one of their best years. He said Imax will keep improving its technology to provide great experiences and help the company grow.
With $393.2 million in North American box office returns, 2023 ranked as Imax’s highest-grossing year domestically — above 2019, a year that fueled nine billion-dollar blockbusters including “Avengers: Endgame.” https://t.co/C38OCrPAEs
