Shreyom Ghosh’s The Vampire of Sheung Shui is a special movie set in Hong Kong that blends horror and comedy. It tells the story of a main character from India, making it stand out.
This movie has caught the attention of the 22nd Hong Kong — Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF), a major event for film projects that happens at the same time as FilMart.
The story, written by D.F.W. Buckingham, centers around Lokesh, a laid-back guy in his 30s. He lives with his strict Jain family in a quiet part of Hong Kong and is waiting to inherit the family’s jewelry store before moving to the U.K. However, when his dad decides to retire, Lokesh needs to prove he can handle the responsibility and follow his family’s strict traditions, or he risks losing the store to his irritating cousin. But there’s a twist—Lokesh is turning into a vampire who craves blood.
Ghosh, who studied at the NYU Tisch School of the Arts, is known for his work on the comedy-drama series “Bhak” and the animated short “Vegetable Rising.”
He shared with Variety that the movie idea began as a joke about an Indian vegan becoming a vampire, which was amusing because both vampires and Jains dislike garlic. This idea gained international interest due to its unique perspective, mixing humor and horror in a story that many could enjoy.
Ghosh explained that the film explores themes of morality, responsibility, and self-sacrifice through its main character, who must drink blood to survive but doesn’t want to harm anyone. He must navigate a world where people often take advantage of others. The movie, at its heart, is about growing up, taking control of one’s life, and celebrating Hong Kong’s cultural diversity.
Michael J. Werner, a well-known figure in the film industry who has worked on several Asian films, is producing the movie alongside Peter Yam. Werner believes that fans of vampire stories and genre films, both in Hong Kong and worldwide, will find this new take on the vampire tale refreshing.
