Oscar-nominated American director Debra Granik, known for Winter’s Bone, will lead the jury of the Venice Film Festival’s Horizons section, which focuses on innovative works. The jury includes Iranian writer and director Ali Asgari, Syrian filmmaker Soudade Kaadan, Greek director Christos Nikou, Swedish actress and director Tuva Novotny, Hungarian filmmaker Gábor Reisz, and Italian screenwriter and director Valia Santella.
Winter’s Bone won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 2010 and earned four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay for Granik and her co-writer Anne Rosellini. Granik’s first film, Down to the Bone, earned her the Best Director prize at Sundance in 2004. In 2015, she released the documentary Stray Dog. Her 2018 film, Leave No Trace, was showcased at both Sundance and Cannes. Granik has recently finished editing a five-part documentary called Conbody VS Everybody and is working on a new project, an adaptation of Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich.

Additionally, Italian critic Gianni Canova will chair the jury for the Luigi de Laurentiis Award, which honors the best first work across all sections of the Venice Film Festival and comes with a $100,000 prize. Joining Canova on this jury are Canadian actor and director Taylor Russell, American writer-director Ricky D’Ambrose, Brazilian filmmaker Barbara Paz, and film festival curator Jacob Wong from the Hong Kong Film Festival.
It was previously announced that Isabelle Huppert will head the main Venice jury. The 81st edition of the Venice Film Festival will take place from August 28 to September 7, with the full lineup being announced on July 23. Source
