Sony’s animated film The Garfield Movie made a good start at the international box office, earning $22 million in its debut across 18 markets, which is about 35% of its eventual international release. The movie is set to open in the U.S. and Canada on Memorial Day weekend, where it’s expected to make around $35 million over the long weekend, competing with Furiosa, the prequel to Mad Max.
In its international debut, The Garfield Movie performed particularly well in Spain, Brazil, Italy, and Peru. Sony reports that its revenue is surpassing similar family-friendly films like DC League of Super-Pets and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. The movie’s performance is comparable to The Secret Life of Pets 2 in the same markets.
The film features Chris Pratt as the voice of Garfield, alongside Samuel L. Jackson voicing Garfield’s father, Vic. The story follows Garfield and his friend Odie as they embark on a high-stakes heist with Vic. Produced by Alcon Entertainment and animation company DNEG, the movie elevates a star-studded voice cast.

Internationally, The Garfield Movie took second place behind The Fall Guy, starring Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling, which added $25.4 million from 78 markets. Despite a solid international performance, The Fall Guy faced challenges in North America, grossing slightly below expectations. It needs strong word of mouth and international interest to cover its $140 million budget.
In other box office news, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire continues its successful run, adding $9.8 million from 78 markets, bringing its global total to $546.9 million after six weeks. Source
