George Miller’s new movie, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, has quickly become a hit in South Korea after its recent debut at the Cannes Film Festival. On its first day, it brought in $575,000 from 75,400 tickets, pushing its total earnings in Korea to $597,000, including some earnings from earlier previews. This data comes from the Kobis service provided by the Korean Film Council (Kofic).
While Furiosa was also released in several other countries on May 22 including France, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines South Korea is the first to report how well the movie is doing because it provides reliable box office data.
Before the pandemic, South Korea was the fourth biggest movie market globally, known for its high attendance rates. Although recovery has been slow post-pandemic, and some Hollywood films haven’t done well recently, Furiosa is showing promising results.
On its release day, Furiosa accounted for 37% of all movie ticket sales in South Korea. It’s also leading in advance ticket sales, holding a 38% share and outpacing the upcoming Korean crime thriller The Plot by 20%.

The film, produced in Australia, goes back to the time before the events of Fury Road and stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Furiosa, a role previously played by Charlize Theron. The story begins with a young Furiosa being captured by a group of bandits led by Warlord Dementus, played by Chris Hemsworth.
After its premiere at Cannes, where it received a six-minute standing ovation, Furiosa is expected to top the North American box office with an estimated $40 million to $45 million in earnings over the upcoming four-day holiday weekend, from 3,750 theaters. Source
