Rise and Shine World Sales, a company based in Berlin, has acquired the rights to a new documentary called “E.1027 – Eileen Gray and the House by the Sea.” This film is competing for a top award at the CPH:DOX festival in Copenhagen, a major event for documentary films in Europe. The documentary, which blends historical footage with re-enactments, tells the story of Eileen Gray, a pioneering woman in modernist architecture.
The focus of the documentary is a house named E.1027, built by Gray and her romantic partner and fellow architect Jean Badovici in Southern France from 1926 to 1929. The design of the house is a testament to Gray’s minimalist and elegant style. However, the famous architect Le Corbusier became obsessed with the house and controversially painted over its white walls with his explicit artworks, without Gray’s consent.
The directors, Beatrice Minger and Christoph Schaub explore Gray’s struggle for recognition in a male-dominated field and the disrespect shown to her work by Le Corbusier. The film aims to shed light on the personal and artistic conflicts surrounding the E.1027 house, rather than focusing on the condemnation of Le Corbusier.
To bring Gray’s story to life, the filmmakers used a mix of shots from the actual house and studio recreations, including CGI to visualize the house without Le Corbusier’s murals. The cast includes Natalie Radmall-Quirke as Eileen Gray, Axel Moustache as Badovici, and Charles Morillon as Le Corbusier.
