This spring has been exciting for horror movie fans with several new releases. Among them, Abigail, a new film directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett who also directed the latest Scream movies, is making a mark at the box office. The movie has already earned $1 million in early showings.
Abigail is anticipated to bring in between $12 million to $15 million during its first weekend, potentially outperforming last week’s top movie, Civil War from A24. The production cost of Abigail was $28 million, suggesting that it could easily turn a profit if it reached the upper range of these earnings predictions during its cinema run.
The story centers on a young vampire ballerina named Abigail, who is the daughter of the famous Count Dracula. The plot thickens when a group of criminals kidnaps her during a $50 million robbery. However, they quickly find themselves in trouble as they are stuck with Abigail, who is not just a dancer but also a vampire.
The movie features a diverse cast including Melissa Barrera from Scream, Dan Stevens, Will Catlett, Kathryn Newton, Kevin Durand, the late Angus Cloud, Giancarlo Esposito, Matthew Goode, and Alisha Weir as the title character, Abigail.
The directors, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett, are part of the film group Radio Silence, known for their work on Ready or Not and the Scream series. The screenplay for Abigail was written by Stephen Shields and Guy Busick and is inspired by the 1936 movie Dracula’s Daughter.
With its expected earnings, Abigail is predicted to open stronger than Civil War which is forecasted to earn between $10 million and $12 million in its second weekend. Other new movies hitting theaters this week include Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and the anime Spy x Family Code: White, both expected to make around $5 million to $6 million in their opening weekends.
