Over the recent holiday weekend, Warner Bros. Discovery saw a big success with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in theaters, but it was their new film, The Color Purple, that really stood out. On Christmas Day, this musical drama made a huge $18.15 million, becoming the second-largest Christmas Day opening ever. It’s only behind Sherlock Holmes from 2009, which made $24.6 million. This makes The Color Purple the top Christmas Day movie since 2009, leading the domestic box office.

Audiences loved it, giving it a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes. This success hints at a possible revival of interest in movie musicals. The Color Purple isn’t alone; another Warner Bros musical, Wonka starring Timothée Chalamet, is also doing well at the box office. The cast of The Color Purple includes notable actors like Fantasia Barrino, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Taraji P. Henson, and Halle Bailey.

This boost in musicals is significant, especially considering other holiday releases like West Side Story, Les Misérables, and Rent didn’t reach such high numbers. Warner Bros. Discovery has had a great run with not just The Color Purple, but also Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and Wonka. Releasing these films around the same time was a bold move, hoping to attract viewers during a busy holiday season.

The Color Purple has reignited interest in musicals, setting the stage for upcoming releases like Mean Girls and Wicked Part 1. Mean Girls, which is based on a stage play (itself an adaptation of a 2004 film and a book), is expected to be a hit for Paramount Pictures when it releases early next year.

Wicked Part 1, directed by Jon M. Chu, is also highly anticipated and will be released around Thanksgiving next year. With its long-standing success on Broadway, Wicked is expected to be a major box-office hit. Mean Girls and Wicked will test the ongoing popularity of musicals.

The Color Purple is currently in theaters and promises to be a memorable experience. For more details, check out Warner Bros’ guide and watch the trailer. Also, keep an eye out for Mean Girls and Wicked Part 1, hitting theaters on January 12, 2024, and November 27, 2024, respectively. Source
