Tamayo Perry, a surfer, lifeguard, and actor known for his roles in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Blue Crush, tragically passed away at 49 after a shark attack in Hawaii. The incident occurred near Mālaekahana Beach on Oahu’s North Shore around 1 p.m., according to a report by the BBC.
The Associated Press reported that Honolulu Ocean Safety and Emergency Services responded to a call about a man with several shark bites. Paramedics brought Perry to shore on a jet ski, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Kurt Lager, the acting chief of Honolulu Ocean Safety, expressed deep sorrow at a press conference. He described Perry as a beloved lifeguard well-known on the North Shore and a professional surfer with a worldwide reputation. Lager highlighted Perry’s infectious personality and his genuine affection for everyone he met.
Perry also had a career in acting, with small roles in the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film, Blue Crush, and Hawaii Five-O. He had been a lifeguard since July 2016 and had been professionally surfing for over ten years.
Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi referred to Perry’s death as a tragic loss, calling him a legendary waterman and a highly respected individual who grew up in the area. The mayor praised Perry as an outstanding member of the Ocean Safety team.
Following the attack, shark warning posters were placed in the area by Ocean Safety officials. Perry is survived by his wife, Emilia Perry. Source
