Danny Cohen, a key producer of The Zone of Interest, has spoken up about director Jonathan Glazer’s controversial Oscars speech. Glazer, when accepting an award for the film, linked its Holocaust theme to the ongoing situation in Gaza, sparking varied reactions.
“The Zone of Interest” tells the story of Rudolf Höss, Auschwitz’s commandant, and his family’s life near the camp. Glazer’s speech drew parallels between the Holocaust’s dehumanization and current events, emphasizing the need to reflect on our actions today.
Cohen, speaking on the Unholy podcast, expressed his disagreement with Glazer’s approach, noting that it had upset many, especially within the Jewish community. He understands their anger, as some feel the film’s important message on Holocaust education got entangled with current political issues, which may not have been Glazer’s intent.
Cohen pointedly disagreed with Glazer’s framing of the Gaza conflict, placing the blame squarely on Hamas for the ongoing violence and the tragic loss of civilian lives.
The speech also received support from some corners, like Stefanie Fox of Jewish Voice for Peace, who appreciated Glazer’s intent to apply Holocaust lessons to today’s injustices.
Cohen revealed that Glazer had prepared his speech with producer James Wilson, excluding executive producer Len Blavatnik from the planning. This collaboration reflects their long-standing partnership in filmmaking and shared ideologies.

Despite his disagreements, Cohen lamented that the controversy might overshadow the film’s achievements, including another Oscar win for best sound. He emphasized the film’s contribution to Holocaust education, a goal shared by him and Blavatnik, the financier.
Ultimately, Cohen hopes the film’s impact on educating about the Holocaust will outlast the current controversy, underscoring their pride in the film’s recognition and its educational potential. Source
