Barcelona-based sales company Film Factory has acquired global rights to Alberto Gastesi’s sci-fi thriller Singular, a previous winner at the Sitges Pitchbox, which will start filming this month.
Singular follows Diana, a university professor working with artificial intelligence linguistic models. She is surprised when her ex, Martín, who is also the father of her deceased son, invites her to spend a day at the lake.
There, she meets a young man named Andrea who looks strikingly similar to her late son. Given Martín’s expertise in robotics, Diana suspects that Andrea might be an android version of their child. Despite wanting to reject Andrea, she feels compelled to help free him from Martín’s control.

The film stars Spanish Academy Goya Award winners Patricia López Arnaiz and Javier Rey as Diana and Martín. Director Gastesi draws inspiration from sci-fi classics like Blade Runner, AI Artificial Intelligence, Ex Machina, and Arrival. The film uses the sci-fi genre to explore deep questions about consciousness, identity, and human emotions, which are increasingly relevant today.
Singular is produced by White Leave Productions and Vidania Films, with support from the ICAA, the Basque government, and the Community of Madrid. Public broadcasters RTVE and EITB are also involved. Producers Sergy Moreno and Alejandra Arróspide describe the film as focusing on artificial intelligence within a family triangle under extraordinary circumstances.
Film Factory managing director Vincente Canales, who will begin sharing the first images with buyers at the American Film Market in November, believes the project will attract global audiences with its innovative storytelling and boundary-pushing approach to the sci-fi genre.
The Spanish film industry is experiencing a surge in high-concept science fiction, horror, and thriller stories. Recent successes include Netflix’s psychological thriller The Platform, Max’s supernatural horror series 30 Coins, and the Sitges 2022 audience award-winner Irati. Source
