Disney is set to bring a live-action version of Moana to the big screen, featuring a new leading actress, Catherine Laga‘aia, alongside the returning Dwayne Johnson, who will again play the beloved demigod Maui. Catherine, a 17-year-old talent from Sydney, Australia, shared her enthusiasm about portraying Moana, a character she deeply admires. She feels privileged to represent her Samoan heritage, as her grandfather is from Fa‘aala, Palauli in Savai‘i, and her grandmother is from Leulumoega Tuai on the island of ‘Upolu.
The film’s cast also includes several actors from New Zealand and Samoa, enhancing the cultural authenticity of the story. John Tui, from Auckland, New Zealand, will portray Moana’s father, Chief Tui, while Frankie Adams, a Samoan New Zealander, will play her mother, Sina. Additionally, Rena Owen, originally from the Bay of Islands, New Zealand, has been cast as Gramma Tala, Moana’s wise and guiding grandmother.
