This Is a Film About the Black Keys Review: The Duo That Rocks Together Stays Together, Even Amid Communication Breakdowns

The rock duo The Black Keys, made up of Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney, named one of their hit albums “Brothers.” This title hints at their strong bond, but it also makes people wonder about their relationship. Are they like the feuding Gallagher brothers from Oasis, or are they more peaceful? The documentary “This Is a Film About the Black Keys” dives into the band’s history, revealing not only the tension between Auerbach and Carney but also what keeps them together. Despite their close connection, they haven’t always gotten along perfectly.

The film suggests their partnership is like an “arranged marriage,” which seems odd considering they grew up close to each other in Akron and slowly became famous together. However, fame brought its own challenges to their friendship. Directed by Jeff Dupre, the documentary highlights how, typically, Carney is the one who’s more outspoken, even leading to a minor spat with Justin Bieber fans after a joke went wrong. Yet, discussing their feelings or the future of The Black Keys is something they’ve avoided, sticking to a “more rock, less talk” philosophy.

Despite seeming a bit traditional in its focus on the rise and challenges of a rock band, the documentary brings a fresh perspective to The Black Keys’ journey, supported by clips, interviews with stars like Beck, and even insights from Auerbach’s first wife on how the band’s success impacted their marriage.

One memorable part of the film is a split-screen scene showing the stark differences between Auerbach and Carney during their first big tour, hinting at potential disaster for their partnership. However, despite a significant break from each other where they barely communicated, they didn’t split up. A simple text from Auerbach to Carney with a picture of Akron’s skies was enough to bring them back together.

In conclusion, Auerbach reflects that they’ve mostly figured each other out, despite both being stubborn. Their reluctance to communicate openly remains a challenge. The documentary, then, not only explores their musical journey but also acts as a rare occasion for them to share more about their relationship than they might have done privately. It’s an insightful look into the dynamics of their partnership, making for an engaging story of rock companionship. Source
