The big question as the prequel A Quiet Place: Day One releases this Friday is whether it will attract viewers without its original stars, John Krasinski and Emily Blunt. The movie, set before the Abbott family’s ordeal in the earlier films, is expected to earn between $40 million and $50 million during its opening weekend across 3,700 theaters. With a production budget of $67 million, this film stars Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn and unfolds during the early days of an alien invasion in New York City. Michael Sarnoski, known for his work on Pig, directs this installment.
Despite typically lower earnings for spinoffs compared to direct sequels, A Quiet Place: Day One is on track to match the debut earnings of its franchise predecessors. The original A Quiet Place was a surprise hit in 2018, opening with $50 million and grossing a total of $340 million worldwide. The sequel also performed well, earning nearly $300 million globally after pandemic-related delays.
Meanwhile, Kevin Costner’s ambitious project Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 is looking at a challenging opening weekend, with projections of just $10 million to $15 million from 4,000 theaters. This performance could spell trouble for the costly film series, each movie of which has a budget of $100 million. Warner Bros. and Costner, who invested $38 million of his own funds into the project, hope to capture audiences’ interest with a story set around the Civil War and the expansion of the American western frontier. Costner directed, co-wrote, and produced the series, which he plans to extend to four films. Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, and Jena Malone star alongside him.
This weekend, Horizon is unlikely to top the box office charts. Instead, A Quiet Place: Day One will compete with Disney and Pixar’s Inside Out 2, which has been leading the box office and is set to be the year’s first movie to reach the $1 billion mark.
