Two songs from the movie Barbie are in the running for the Best Song award at the 96th Academy Awards. The songs are “What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell and I’m Just Ken, by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt. Although three songs from “Barbie” were considered, only two could be nominated due to the rules of the Academy.

Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell, who are siblings, previously won an Oscar for a song in the James Bond movie “No Time to Die.” Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt were part of the team that won for Lady Gaga’s “Shallow” in the movie “A Star Is Born.”

These songs from “Barbie” will be competing with several others. Jon Batiste and Dan Wilson’s “It Never Went Away” from “American Symphony,” Diane Warren’s “The Fire Inside” from “Flamin’ Hot,” and “Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)” by Scott George from “Killers of the Flower Moon” are also nominated.

Jon Batiste has won an Oscar before for the Pixar film “Soul.” Diane Warren has been nominated 15 times but has not won competitively; she did receive a special Oscar in 2022.

Some songs from other films like “Asteroid City” and “The Color Purple” didn’t make it to the final nominations list. The Academy selects 15 songs for a shortlist and then narrows it down to five nominees.

The nominations for film scores were also announced. Ludwig Göransson, who won for “Black Panther,” got nominated for “Oppenheimer.” Robbie Robertson, who recently passed away, received a posthumous nomination for “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Laura Karpman got her first Oscar nomination for “American Fiction.” John Williams, a very famous composer, received his 54th nomination for “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.” Lastly, Jerskin Fendrix was nominated for his work on “Poor Things,” marking his first Oscar nomination.
